Sivasagar wants the CBI look into Zubeen Garg’s case and demands justice

Thousands of citizens in Sivasagar took to the streets on Thursday, demanding a thorough investigation into the sudden death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. The historic town echoed with slogans of “Justice for Zubeen” as people expressed their grief and sought accountability. The peaceful march began at the Bhupen Hazarika statue in the heart of Sivasagar, where participants paid tribute to the legendary musician before proceeding through the town’s busy streets. Students, youth groups, and ordinary residents joined in solidarity, holding banners and chanting slogans demanding a transparent and impartial inquiry into Garg’s death.

Alongside the march, a mass signature campaign was launched, aimed at reinforcing public demand for justice. Demonstrators stressed the need for the case to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a fair and professional probe into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s untimely demise. In a significant development earlier on Thursday, members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) visited the residence of entrepreneur Shyamkanu Mahanta as part of their ongoing inquiry. Authorities, however, have not shared additional details regarding the search or findings.

The protest comes a day after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured the public that the investigation would be comprehensive, and no one would be exempt from scrutiny. The Chief Minister also confirmed that he had convened a high-level meeting with the Director General of Police (DGP), ADGP (CID), Chief Secretary, and other senior officials to review progress in the case.Following the meeting, the Chief Minister directed the DGP to form a nine-member Special Investigation Team tasked with conducting the probe with full professional integrity. The SIT has since been actively pursuing leads, with the visit to Mahanta’s residence marking one of its first major actions.
