In a concerted effort to address the declining large cardamom cultivation in Sikkim, a pivotal brainstorming session was convened at Vigyan Bhawan. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Sandeep Tambe, IFS Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, gathered key stakeholders to develop a sustainable strategy for revitalizing this vital crop, which has seen incomes plummet due to viral and fungal diseases over the past few decades.
The Department of Science and Technology presented groundbreaking research on producing virus-free planting material through indexing and tissue culture, along with evolutionary studies of five large cardamom cultivars to develop disease-tolerant varieties. The Spices Board showcased advancements in disease-tolerant lines, innovative pollinators, advanced cardamom dryers, and strategic marketing approaches. The Horticulture Department underscored the importance of soil health management, mass production of virus-free planting material, and farmer capacity-building initiatives.
The session culminated in a draft concept note aimed at reviving large cardamom cultivation in Sikkim. All stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate closely in the coming weeks to develop a comprehensive project proposal. This initiative seeks to restore the prosperity of large cardamom farmers and ensure the sustainable growth of this crucial crop.
