Sikkim is set to host the 13th International Tourism Mart (ITM) for the North Eastern Region from November 13 to 16, highlighting sustainable tourism and environmental conservation. The event, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, will bring together stakeholders from across India and abroad to promote responsible and inclusive tourism development in the North East. The event will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, alongside key dignitaries including Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu. Tourism Ministers from all North Eastern States, senior government officials, and representatives from the travel industry are also expected to attend. ITM, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, aims to position the North East as a global destination for eco-tourism, adventure, culture, and wellness. The event underscores the government’s efforts to integrate the region—often called the “Ashta Lakshmi” of India—into the country’s broader tourism narrative while promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible travel.
Gangtok’s selection as the host city is significant, as Sikkim is widely recognised for its model of sustainable tourism and organic practices. The state’s approach to balancing conservation, community participation, and tourism aligns closely with the Ministry’s ‘Travel for Life’ initiative, which advocates responsible, eco-friendly tourism. This year’s Mart will feature participation from 19 countries, including Spain, Thailand, France, Russia, Germany, and Vietnam. Delegates include 39 international tour operators, 50 domestic buyers, 91 domestic sellers, along with domestic and international influencers and travel media representatives. The programme includes B2B meetings, panel discussions, and product presentations focusing on cinematic tourism, digital innovation, homestays, youth entrepreneurship, adventure travel, and sustainability. Cultural performances from across the North East will showcase the region’s artistic and traditional diversity. Delegates will also visit key sites in and around Gangtok, such as Rumtek Monastery, Do Drul Chorten, and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, followed by post-event familiarisation tours across other North Eastern States.
The 13th International Tourism Mart aims to strengthen the North East’s position as a global tourism hub, highlighting Sikkim’s blend of serenity, culture, and environmental leadership. The event reflects India’s commitment to promoting sustainable, experience-driven travel and boosting the visibility of the region on the international tourism map.
