The Office of the Inspector General of Police, Check Post Headquarters in Gangtok, has issued strict winter safety guidelines for all tourist vehicles moving across Sikkim. The order was released on December 16 and will remain in force from December through the end of March. The decision comes ahead of the peak tourist season when many visitors travel to snow-covered parts of the state.
According to the order, police stations in Chungthang, Lachen, Lachung, Sheruthang and Kupup have been directed to enforce the rules closely. These are the areas where heavy snowfall, road blockages and sudden changes in weather often cause risk to travellers. Officers have been asked to monitor vehicles regularly and ensure that all safety equipment is available before allowing movement in high-altitude zones.
The order makes it mandatory for tourist vehicles to carry tyre chains, garbage bags, a shovel and spade, two portable oxygen cylinders and a first aid kit. Authorities said that the tyre chains will help vehicles maintain grip on slippery roads, while oxygen cylinders are necessary for passengers who may face breathing problems in high altitudes. The order also stresses on cleanliness and responsible waste management in sensitive mountain regions.
Officials stated that any vehicle that fails to comply with these safety rules will face penalties. Police will challan violators under existing laws. The administration said the move aims to prevent avoidable accidents, improve preparedness during emergencies and ensure smooth tourism activity during harsh winter months.
The police further said that the step has been taken keeping in mind the safety of tourists as well as local drivers. Winter tourism in Sikkim has increased sharply in recent years, especially in popular snow-bound destinations. The order seeks to make sure that visitors can travel safely and that emergency response can be handled quickly if required.
