Sikkim Panchayat Leader Joins Republic Day Celebrations Under Vibrant Village Programme

An elected member of the Mangan Zilla Panchayat in Sikkim, Pema Wangyal Bhutia, attended the Republic Day Parade and the At Home Reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi after being nominated under the Vibrant Village Programme. The events were organised on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day of India.

According to a press release issued by the Planning and Development Department, the nomination was made in recognition of the role played by Panchayati Raj Institutions in promoting development at the grassroots level, especially in Sikkim’s border areas. The participation of a Panchayat representative from the state in the national celebrations was described as a reflection of the growing importance given to local leadership in national development efforts.

Officials said the Vibrant Village Programme focuses on improving living conditions in remote and strategically located border villages. Under the programme, efforts are being made to strengthen basic infrastructure, improve road and digital connectivity, create livelihood opportunities, and ensure better access to essential services such as health, education, and welfare schemes. These interventions are aimed at reducing regional imbalance and improving the quality of life for people living in far-flung areas.

Expressing gratitude for the honour, Bhutia said the nomination was a moment of pride not only for him but also for the entire border community of Sikkim. He said the recognition has encouraged him to continue working for inclusive and sustainable development in his area. He also noted that such initiatives motivate local representatives to remain closely connected with the needs and concerns of people at the village level.

Officials added that the presence of a Panchayat member from Sikkim at the Republic Day celebrations under the Vibrant Village Programme highlights the Government of India’s commitment to ensuring that development reaches even the last village along the country’s borders. They said the programme underlines the belief that strong local institutions and community participation are essential for long-term nation-building and balanced regional growth.
