Sikkim marks 50 years in Indian Union

Sikkim marked a historic milestone on Thursday as it celebrated 50 years of statehood, with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang paying tribute to the state’s journey from a tranquil Himalayan kingdom to a vibrant and progressive state within the Indian Union. Addressing a large gathering at Manan Kendra in Gangtok, CM Tamang delivered a rousing speech, reaffirming his government’s commitment to progress, inclusivity, and preservation of Sikkim’s distinct identity.“We inherited a legacy, now we build a future,” said Tamang. He lauded the people of Sikkim for their resilience and unity over the past five decades and pledged that the next 50 years would be marked by sustainable development, youth empowerment, and social justice.

The golden jubilee celebration was attended by a host of dignitaries, former chief ministers, lawmakers, civil society members, and thousands of citizens. A commemorative video showcasing Sikkim’s transformation since 1975 was screened, evoking nostalgia and pride among attendees. Cultural performances highlighting Sikkim’s rich traditions, alongside a photo exhibition chronicling its development milestones, were also part of the day-long event.

CM Tamang reiterated his government’s focus on environmental protection, youth-driven innovation, and enhanced connectivity, positioning Sikkim as a model for other Himalayan states.“The road ahead is challenging, but with unity and vision, Sikkim will emerge stronger and more self-reliant,” he  said inviting citizens to be equal partners in shaping the next chapter of the state’s history.
