Sikkim govt create more new rules to avoid congestion

The Sikkim government plans to adopt the odd-even traffic rule in the Gangtok municipal area from November 5 to combat congestion, authorities said on Saturday. The system allows odd-numbered vehicles to operate on odd dates, whereas even-numbered vehicles can operate on even dates from 9.30 a.m. to noon and 3.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. An exemption period would be in effect from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., they noted.

The regulation applies to Gangtok’s municipal limits, specifically the National Highway between Mayfair Fatak and GICI, but excludes feeder roads. These limits do not apply to emergency services such as ambulances, police, and firefighters, as well as some government and media vehicles. To help reduce traffic congestion, the administration has stated that both government and private schools in the city will adjust their school hours beginning on the same day. All government schools will start at 8 a.m. and stop at 2:15 p.m. Schools that work a double shift, such as Sichey SSS, CS Rai Arithang SS, and Bojoghari SSS, will keep their current schedules. According to officials, private schools must begin classes at 8 a.m. and stop between 12.30 and 2.30 p.m.
