On the birth anniversary of Late Shri Nar Bahadur Bhandari, Sikkim’s second Chief Minister, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang paid heartfelt tribute to the leader whose visionary contributions reshaped the state’s trajectory.
Born on October 5, 1940, Bhandari served as Chief Minister from 1979 to 1994, leaving an indelible mark on Sikkim’s development. In a Facebook post, CM Tamang celebrated Bhandari’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people and his foresight that led to significant milestones, including the historic inclusion of the Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This landmark decision not only protected the linguistic rights of the Nepali-speaking community but also enhanced their cultural identity on a national stage.
“Our government observes ‘Shri Bhandari Jayanti’ as a humble tribute to his enduring legacy,” Tamang remarked. He further announced the launch of the Nar Bahadur Bhandari Fellowship Scheme, designed to provide exceptional students from Sikkim with opportunities for higher education in prestigious universities around the globe.
