Sikkim has emerged as the leading Northeastern state in attracting foreign tourists, with a total of 1.62 lakh international visitors recorded in 2022 and 2023, according to the Union Tourism Ministry. The state welcomed 68,645 foreign tourists in 2022, and the number surged to 93,908 in 2023, marking a strong post-pandemic recovery in the tourism sector. These figures were revealed in a written response by the Union Tourism Minister to a parliamentary question by Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba. Indra Hang Subba credited the swift recovery to the proactive efforts of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, stating: “The Sikkim government took immediate steps to promote the state as a safe and attractive destination at both national and international levels after Covid restrictions were lifted. The role of tourism stakeholders, including the Travel Agents Association of Sikkim, was also crucial in this revival.”
Tourism remains a key economic pillar for Sikkim, supporting nearly 18% of the state’s population. The 2024-25 State Budget prioritizes tourism infrastructure, with a focus on innovative projects and improved road connectivity. Ahead of the summer tourism season, the Sikkim government is in high-level discussions with Union ministries and Central agencies to ensure smooth operations of Pakyong Airport and NH 10, the state’s primary highway.
Earlier this week, MP Indra Hang Subba met Union Civil Aviation Minister and NHIDCL officials to expedite efforts for better air and road connectivity, ensuring seamless travel for tourists visiting the Himalayan state.
