Several travellers were penalized for public urination near Atal Setu in Sikkim as part of a strict cleanliness drive by the Rangpo Nagar Panchayat (RNP). The bus driver of their vehicle was also fined for failing to inform passengers about Swachh Bharat Abhiyan guidelines and the availability of public restrooms. According to officials, the incident occurred on Sunday morning, when a passenger bus stopped near Atal Setu. Instead of using designated public washrooms, some travellers relieved themselves in an open area, prompting immediate action from the RNP inspection team.
Authorities emphasized that public nuisance is strictly prohibited, and penalties will be imposed on violators. Repeat offences could result in higher fines or legal action. This enforcement aligns with the Sikkim government’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness in public spaces. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has actively promoted hygiene and discipline, urging citizens to embrace Swachhata (cleanliness) as a way of life.
RNP officials urged travellers and transport operators to act responsibly, highlighting Rangpo’s status as a key entry point to Sikkim. Signboards and awareness campaigns have been launched to educate the public on sanitation rules and penalties.
