Scholars Gather in Deorali to Celebrate Legacy of Himalayan Women and Alexandra David-Neel

The inaugural ceremony of a two-day international symposium on “Great Women in the Himalayas” was held on Thursday at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology in Deorali, marking the beginning of discussions on the role and contributions of women in the Himalayan region.

The symposium is being organised to commemorate the legacy of Alexandra David-Neel, known for her pioneering journeys across Tibet and the Himalayas, and her work in bringing Himalayan culture and spirituality to the wider world.

Scholars, researchers and students from different regions have gathered for the event to share their research and perspectives. The discussions are focused on highlighting the lives and contributions of women who have played important roles in shaping the cultural, social and intellectual landscape of the Himalayas.

Speakers at the inaugural session spoke about the need to document and recognise the achievements of women from the region, many of whom have remained less known despite their contributions. They also stressed the importance of academic platforms that bring together diverse voices to study history, culture and society in a more inclusive way.

The symposium aims to create space for dialogue and exchange of ideas among participants. It also seeks to encourage young researchers and students to explore themes related to gender, culture and regional history.
