Rural Students Get Firsthand Exposure to Armed Forces Life in Gangtok

In an effort to encourage young people to consider careers in the Armed Forces, the Chairman of the Students’ Welfare Board (SWB), Mr Sonam Chopel Sherpa, led an educational tour for 60 students from remote and rural schools across Sikkim.

The exposure visit covered several Indian Army establishments in and around Gangtok. The students were accompanied by six teachers and members of the Students’ Welfare Board. Ten students from each of the State’s six districts took part in the programme.

The main aim of the visit was to give students a clear and practical understanding of life in the Armed Forces. Organisers said the tour was designed to help students learn about discipline, career structure, recruitment procedures and the opportunities available in defence services. The Board believes such firsthand exposure can help students make informed decisions about their future.

The tour began at the Army’s Libing area at Lower Syari. Here, students were introduced to eco-friendly initiatives such as a baling plant, an organic composting machine and a plastic shredder used for recycling. They also visited the Army Eco Park. Army officials explained how waste management and environmental protection are being handled in a systematic manner.

Later, the students visited the 5th Mile Artillery Display. Army personnel conducted a live demonstration of the Bofors artillery system and explained its role in operations, including its importance during the Kargil War. Students interacted with officers and asked questions about daily life and duties in the Army.

At Kyongnosla, an Army officer briefed the students on eligibility conditions, recruitment procedures and provisions under the Agniveer Scheme of the Government of India. The officer encouraged students to prepare themselves both physically and academically if they wish to join the Army.

The Students’ Welfare Board expressed gratitude to Lieutenant General Manraj Singh Mann, General Officer Commanding, Major General M S Rathore, Lt Col Avishek Sharma and Lt Col Snehasis Sahu for supporting and facilitating the visit.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sonam Chopel Sherpa said the purpose of the programme was to make students aware of the wide range of career opportunities in the Armed Forces. He said such visits help build confidence and a sense of responsibility among youth. He also mentioned that the State government under Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang has been focusing on youth development and expanding employment opportunities.

The Chairman further informed that similar visits to Indian Air Force and Indian Navy establishments are being planned in the coming months so that students can gain exposure to all branches of the Armed Forces.
