Sikkim is seeking immediate restoration and strengthening of its key road networks after severe floods and landslides disrupted the state’s economy and tourism sector. BJP Sikkim State President DR Thapa met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss urgent infrastructure interventions aimed at ensuring reliable connectivity across the state. During the meeting, Thapa highlighted the deteriorating condition of National Highway 10 (NH-10), Sikkim’s primary artery connecting the state with West Bengal and the rest of India. The highway sustained heavy damage from the 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood and recurrent landslides during successive monsoons. Thapa noted that these disruptions have halved tourist arrivals, increased commodity prices, and strained the hospitality and local business sectors, putting livelihoods at risk.
Thapa proposed climate-resilient infrastructure measures, including slope stabilization, highway realignment, and strengthened coordination between the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the state government. He also suggested constructing an alternative route between Singtam and Sevoke to ensure uninterrupted connectivity in emergencies. The discussion extended to North Sikkim, where 14 bridges and stretches of NH-10 were destroyed by floods and landslides, leaving towns like Dzongu, Chungthang, Lachen, and Lachung isolated despite temporary repairs. Thapa urged the Centre to prioritise durable reconstruction using expertise from NHIDCL and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), emphasizing that robust infrastructure is crucial not only for local livelihoods but also for national security. Traffic congestion in Gangtok was another focal point. With over 1 lakh vehicles on city roads, residents face daily delays of three to four hours. Thapa proposed a Ring Road around the capital to improve mobility for commuters, businesses, and tourists, and requested feasibility studies along with prioritised funding for the project.
Responding to the proposals, Union Minister Gadkari assured that the Centre remains committed to addressing Sikkim’s road challenges. He outlined ongoing and planned projects to strengthen connectivity, enhance climate resilience, and support the state’s socio-economic growth. BJP Sikkim stated that infrastructure development, particularly road restoration and expansion, remains a key focus for the state. Officials noted that ensuring seamless connectivity is vital not only for tourism and trade but also for sustaining economic growth and improving the quality of life for residents across Sikkim.
