Renowned Assamese Singer Samar Hazarika Passes Away

Eminent Assamese singer Samar Hazarika, younger brother of cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, passed away on Tuesday morning at his residence in Nizarapar, Guwahati. He had been suffering from pneumonia for a prolonged period.

Samar Hazarika began his musical career in 1960 and went on to sing several memorable songs for Assamese films. Over the years, he also released multiple music albums, earning him wide appreciation among music lovers.

His demise has created a deep void in Assam’s cultural and musical landscape, with fans, artists, and members of the cultural fraternity mourning the loss of a cherished voice.

His last rites will be held at the Nabagraha crematorium in Guwahati with full state honors. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief over his passing, while Assam Minister and AGP president Atul Bora described the loss as irreparable to Assam’s cultural life.

Expressing his condolences, Bora said Samar Hazarika was a towering figure in the state’s cultural sphere whose soulful songs, melodious voice, and creative brilliance evoked nostalgia and touched countless hearts.
