The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially nominated Rameswar Teli and Mission Ranjan Das for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Assam. This decision comes as the state prepares to fill two Rajya Sabha seats that recently became vacant. Earlier this month, Assam BJP President Bhabesh Kalita revealed that a total of 10 members had applied for the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats. “We have received applications from esteemed members, including former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, ex-MPs Rajdeep Roy and Topon Gogoi, incumbent MLA Manab Deka, and former MLA Mission Ranjan Das,” Kalita said.
Following a state election committee meeting attended by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and state in-charge Harish Dwivedi, the committee reviewed the applications in detail. Kalita stated, “The meeting discussed the candidates extensively, and we have decided to forward the names to the central parliamentary committee for final approval.”
The Rajya Sabha seats became vacant after Sonowal and Kamakhya Tassa were elected to the Lok Sabha. Currently, Assam has seven seats in the Rajya Sabha, with the BJP-led ruling alliance holding six of these seats—four by the BJP, and one each by its allies, the AGP and UPPL. The remaining seat is held by an Independent MP.
