Rallies and processions are strictly prohibited by Guwahati Police in order to reduce traffic in the city

The Guwahati Police have imposed a citywide ban on processions, rallies, marathons, walkathons, and other such events. The order, which has come into immediate effect, was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) Imdad Ali, APS, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

Officials said the directive was necessitated by repeated complaints of severe traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours, when rallies and processions often paralyze movement across arterial routes. “It is essential to manage road usage efficiently for the smooth flow of traffic in Guwahati. Processions and rallies often cause severe traffic snarls, leading to inconvenience for commuters and delays in emergency services,” the order stated.

The police stressed that the measure is not only about easing congestion but also about safeguarding public safety. Large gatherings on roads, according to authorities, create bottlenecks that endanger both routine travelers and emergency response systems such as ambulances and fire services. With Guwahati already struggling with rapid urban expansion and vehicle growth, officials said extraordinary measures were required to restore order on its roads.

Violations of the ban will attract penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The authorities have also kept a provision for appeal, allowing individuals or organizations to submit written objections for review if they seek exemption or modification of the restriction.
