Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the preparation of detailed project reports (DPR) for two new railway lines in Assam: The Agthori (Guwahati)–Dekargaon (Tezpur) line, spanning 129 km, and the Dekargaon (Tezpur)–Silghat line, extending 25 km. He noted that the sanctioning of these projects will require stakeholder consultations and approvals from NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance, thus affecting implementation timelines. Currently, Tezpur is served by the Dekargaon railway station, which offers six pairs of train services connecting to Guwahati and other regions. To enhance passenger amenities and rail infrastructure, the Ministry has initiated the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which focuses on station redevelopment, improving convenience and accessibility through various facilities. Among 1,337 identified stations for development across India, 50 are in Assam, showing significant redevelopment progress including completed works at Haibargaon station and ongoing improvements at several others. The station redevelopment process also considers safety and necessary approvals, with timelines influenced by specific site conditions and funding availability. For the current year, Rs 435 crore has been allocated under the Plan Head-53 for Customer Amenities in the Northeast Frontier Railway, with Rs 365 crore already expended by December 2025.
