Protein Day marks a change in the trend of protein consumption in Kolkata

In Kolkata, food has always followed rhythm and ritual. Sunday afternoons mean mangsho and bhaat shared with family, office mornings begin with neatly packed tiffin carriers, and evenings are often spent at para joints over rolls and cutlets. Chicken, in many forms, has long been part of these familiar meals, whether cooked slowly at home or picked up on the way back from work. People never stopped to think about what these meals provided beyond taste and comfort. But that is beginning to change. Across households and younger consumers, there is a growing awareness of protein and its role in everyday diets, signalling a quiet shift in how Kolkata looks at the food it has always loved.

This growing awareness is also reflected in broader consumption trends across the country. Industry insights by CRISIL further indicate that the poultry sector is expected to see a 4–6% increase in revenue this fiscal, driven by steady consumption growth, rising per capita meat consumption, and a growing preference for protein-rich diet. These trends mirror changing food habits in urban centres like Mumbai, where consumers are actively making more protein-forward choices in their daily routines, from eggs and sprouts at breakfast to grilled chicken salads and balanced, protein-rich meals.

As awareness around protein continues to grow, chicken remains a familiar and accessible choice for many households across Kolkata. “At Godrej Foods Ltd., we are seeing strong year-on-year growth in demand for packed, hygienic chicken, reflecting a clear shift in how Indian consumers are building their everyday protein plates. Households today are looking for convenient, safe, and high-quality options that make it easier to add reliable protein to daily meals without compromising on taste,” said Anushree Dewan, Head of Marketing and Innovation, Godrej Foods Ltd.
