Prohibitory orders in Karbi Anglong after escalating protests

The District Magistrate of Karbi Anglong has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS Act following violent protests in Diphu over illegal settlements.

The unrest erupted in Diphu, the administrative center of Karbi Anglong, as protests against the eviction of illegal settlers escalated into violence. Demonstrators, led by the Karbi Students Association and other organizations, attempted to storm the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) headquarters, demanding the immediate eviction of unauthorized settlers from Professional Grazing Reserved (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserved (VGR) lands.

Initially peaceful, the protest quickly turned violent, compelling police to resort to blank firing and lathi charges to disperse the crowd. The situation became highly volatile as hundreds of protesters converged on the KAAC headquarters, prompting the district administration to take stringent measures.
