Priyanka Downplays Bhupen Exit, Calls Pre-Election Defections ‘Routine’

On Thursday, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, chairperson of the Screening Committee, addressed the resignation of former Assam PCC president Bhupen Borah, deemphasizing its political significance by stating that party-switching before elections is typical in Indian politics. Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Gandhi asserted that the Congress party maintains strong leadership in Assam, emphasizing its unity and readiness to engage effectively in the upcoming Assembly elections. She described the election as a “battle” with confidence in the party’s success, detailing plans for consultations over ticket distribution to ensure a robust and organized electoral campaign. Furthermore, Gandhi was actively involved in party operations at Rajiv Bhavan, conducting meetings with the presidents of all 35 district committees and engaging individually with Congress MLAs to strategize for the future. Earlier, she participated in a Political Affairs Department meeting focused on the impending Assembly elections and collaborated with Screening Committee members who have been gathering feedback from grassroots workers across Assam.
