Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council for introducing what he described as “one of the most consequential reforms in India’s GST structure.” The Chief Minister expressed his views shortly after the Council approved a sweeping overhaul of the country’s indirect taxation system, a move that experts believe could reshape India’s economic landscape. On Wednesday, the GST Council decided to reduce the tax slabs, consolidating them into just two primary categories—5 per cent and 18 per cent. The new structure is expected to come into effect from September 22. This simplification marks a major shift from the earlier multi-tier system, which often confused businesses and consumers alike.
Taking to social media platform X, Sarma wrote, “Assam extends heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji for ushering in one of the most consequential reforms in India’s GST structure, and to the GST Council for ensuring these changes see the light of day.” He further added that the new tax structure would serve as a “super booster for the Indian economy,” particularly benefiting small and medium enterprises, encouraging job creation, stimulating consumption, and ultimately leaving more disposable income in the hands of ordinary citizens.
Reflecting on his journey with the GST system, Sarma recalled his tenure as Assam’s Finance Minister when the reform was first rolled out in 2017. “Having closely followed the evolution of GST over the last eight years, I see this as a defining moment. India’s ability to successfully implement GST and also to adapt and reform when required is a shining testament to the Modi Government’s firm yet flexible approach to governance,” he remarked.
