Purabi Dairy, the biggest dairy cooperative in Northeast India, celebrated pre-Magh Bihu on Monday at its Guwahati dairy processing factory, commemorating a year of robust expansion, increased farmer involvement, and growing presence throughout Assam’s dairy landscape.Speaking to reporters at the event, representatives of the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL) emphasized that Purabi Dairy has been steadily expanding its cooperative network and experiencing a notable increase in milk production and procurement over the past year. The number of Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS) under Purabi has grown over the course of the year, and Upper Assam’s cooperative dairy system has also significantly strengthened, bringing more farmers into the organized dairy fold and guaranteeing steady income prospects at the local level.
Purabi Dairy has always prioritized the growth of its farmers. WAMUL Managing Director Sameer Kumar Parida stated, “We are ensuring that dairy farming becomes a more dependable and sustainable livelihood for thousands of rural families across Assam by strengthening procurement systems, expanding our cooperative base, and improving market access.”Purabi Dairy added Purabi Traditional Indian Sweets to its lineup during the year, and customers responded favorably. While longer-shelf-life goods like UHT milk have allowed Purabi to access newer and farther-flung markets, value-added products like flavored milk and ice cream continue to see high demand. Purabi goods are now accessible in a larger geographic area thanks to a more robust distribution network, guaranteeing a steady supply and better customer access. In collaboration with the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC), a number of new Purabi Milk Booths were established in Guwahati during the year, bolstering local entrepreneurship and last-mile delivery.Officials reaffirmed that Purabi’s primary goal is still to develop the rural economy, even though consumer outreach has increased. Farmers are increasing production and income stability via ongoing capacity building, guaranteed procurement, prompt payments, and technical assistance.
With new milk processing facilities planned for Silchar, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh, Purabi Dairy is getting ready for the next stage of infrastructure development. This will support region-specific dairy development in Barak Valley and Upper Assam, increase local procurement, and lower transportation costs.Monday’s pre-Magh Bihu festival included cultural performances and traditional Assamese dishes made with Purabi dairy products, creating a joyous mood that reflected the season’s harvest spirit.
