Post-Covid, Child Trafficking Cases In West Bengal Doubled

A report on child trafficking in India revealed that the average number of child trafficking cases in West Bengal has doubled since the Covid pandemic, from 35 to 72. Other states with increased cases include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, and Rajasthan. The report, released jointly by Games24x7 and Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation (KSCF), founded by Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, highlights the growing issue of child trafficking in India.

Games24x7’s data science team analyzed KSCF and its partners’ intervention in child trafficking cases in India between 2016 and 2022. Between 2016 and 2022, 13,549 children under 18 were rescued, with 80% being adolescents aged 13-18 years, 13% aged 9-12 years, and 2.33% aged 5-8 years.

Interestingly, a small number of children were rescued younger than five years. TrivikramanThampy, Co-founder and Co-CEO, Games24x7, emphasized the urgent need for tech-based interventions in child upliftment. He said “This report not only sets the stage for future collaborations but also envisions a world where technology serves a higher purpose – the promise of a brighter future for every child, ultimately creating a safer tomorrow.”
