Yangang Police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the suspected murder of former panchayat member Sabitri Sharma in Sripatam village near Yangang, officials said. According to police sources, Sharma, who was living alone at her residence, was found dead under suspicious circumstances. The incident created panic in the locality, with neighbours and residents raising alarm after the body was discovered.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police detained Anuj Basnet, a neighbour of the deceased. He was later arrested in connection with the case. Police described Basnet as an alleged habitual offender. He is currently in police custody and is being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials said that the exact motive behind the crime has not been established yet. Investigators are looking into all possible angles, including personal enmity and other local factors, to understand the circumstances leading to Sharma’s death.
A case has been registered against the accused under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation is being led by Police Inspector Thendup Bhutia. Police said further details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
