PM Narendra Modi to Launch and Lay Foundation of Projects Worth ₹37,500 Crore in Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on March 13 and 14, during which he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of several major infrastructure and development projects worth around ₹37,500 crore across the state.
The Prime Minister’s Assam tour will begin in Kokrajhar, where he will address a massive public gathering and launch projects worth about ₹4,574 crore. Among the key initiatives is a ₹3,217 crore project under Asom Mala 2.0, aimed at constructing 883 km of roads and 36 new bridges. He will also lay the foundation stone for ₹1,101 crore worth of road infrastructure projects in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
During the Kokrajhar programme, the Prime Minister will flag off three new train services—Kamakhya–Charlapunj Amrit Bharat Express, Narengi–Agla Express, and Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Express. He will also lay the foundation stone for the Kokrajhar–Gelephu railway line, a key rail link expected to strengthen connectivity between India and Bhutan.
From Kokrajhar, Modi will travel to Guwahati, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation for projects worth around ₹8,841 crore at a programme to be held at the Jyoti Bishnu Kalakshetra.
Key projects in Guwahati include the ₹780 crore Numaligarh–Siliguri product pipeline capacity expansion, foundation stone laying of the ₹3,633 crore Fakirating–Tinsukia double railway line, and inauguration of the Chaparmukh–Dibrugarh and Rangiya–Murkongselek railway electrification projects completed at a cost of ₹1,180 crore and ₹421 crore respectively.
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for a ₹210 crore ropeway project connecting Kamakhya Railway Station to Kamakhya Temple, inaugurate the PM Ekta Mall in Guwahati, distribute land pattas to 20,000 tea garden workers, and release PM-Kisan scheme funds for 9.32 crore farmers across the country. He will also launch the power generation process of the ₹2,320 crore Kopili Hydroelectric Project located in Dima Hasao and West Karbi Anglong districts.
On March 14, the Prime Minister will visit Silchar, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of projects worth ₹24,505 crore. The most significant among them is the ₹22,864 crore Silchar–Shillong–Guwahati Expressway corridor, a 166-km highway expected to drastically improve connectivity in the region.
Other projects include the foundation stone for a ₹564 crore flyover in Silchar, a ₹122 crore agriculture college at Patharkandi, and the inauguration of a ₹655 crore railway electrification project between Silchar, Badarpur and Churaibari.
Officials said the expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Guwahati and Silchar from about 8 hours to around 4.5 hours, significantly boosting connectivity and economic development in the Barak Valley.
Meanwhile, a fresh phase of agitation has been announced demanding the creation of a separate Kamatapur state and Scheduled Tribe status for the Koch–Rajbongshi community. As part of the protest programme, organisers have called for a 36-hour Assam bandh on the day of the Prime Minister’s visit to the state.
Addressing a press conference, leaders of the organisation said the longstanding demands of the Koch–Rajbongshi community have continued to be ignored. They stated that despite several rounds of protests and representations in the past, both the Centre and the state government have yet to provide a permanent solution to the issues of statehood and tribal recognition.
The organisation also announced that a Koch–Rajbongshi motorcycle rally will be held in Gossaigaon on March 15. This will be followed by a major public rally on March 17, where the next phase of the agitation will be announced.
The leaders said the movement would be intensified until their demands are met. They added that the 36-hour Assam bandh during the Prime Minister’s visit would serve as a strong mark of protest.
According to the organisation, granting Scheduled Tribe status and creating a separate Kamatapur state are essential for the social, cultural, and economic development of the Koch–Rajbongshi community. They warned that if the government fails to take positive steps on the issue soon, the agitation will be further intensified.
