PM Modi, Dr. Jaishankar praise Bhutan’s reverent reception of Buddha relics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Sunday expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of Bhutan for their warm and reverent welcome of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha. The relics, known as the Piprahwa–Kapilavastu Relics, hold immense historical and spiritual significance and were ceremoniously installed at Tashichho Dzong monastery in Thimphu on November 8.

PM Modi described Buddha’s teachings as a sacred bond between India and Bhutan, conveying peace, compassion, and harmony, while Dr. Jaishankar lauded the respect shown by the Bhutanese leadership and citizens toward the holy relics. The installation ceremony included a traditional Chipdrel procession, prayers, religious rituals, and a guard of honour, underscoring the deep spiritual connection between the two nations. The relics will remain open for public viewing until November 18, according to the Ministry of Culture.

Gangtok saw an increased interest in Buddhist artifacts and literature following the news of the relics’ installation in Bhutan. Local shops reported higher footfalls from devotees and tourists eager to explore items related to Lord Buddha’s teachings, reflecting growing cultural engagement with neighbouring Bhutan’s spiritual heritage. PM Modi is scheduled to visit Bhutan on November 11 for a two-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and furthering cooperation across cultural, economic, and strategic domains.
