Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tribute to legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan in Parliament as a “historic moment” for the state. The Prime Minister’s remarks, made during a speech in the ongoing session, highlighted Barphukan’s unmatched bravery and his contribution to safeguarding India’s northeastern frontiers in the 17th century. In a heartfelt social media post, CM Sarma expressed deep pride and joy over the national recognition of one of Assam’s greatest heroes. “It is a matter of great pride for Assam that for the first time in the temple of democracy, India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji recalled the valour of Lachit Barphukan along with that of other stalwarts of Maa Bharti,” he wrote.
Barphukan, the commander of the Ahom army, is best remembered for his leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat, where he defeated the mighty Mughal forces on the Brahmaputra River near present-day Guwahati. His strategic brilliance and courage have long been celebrated in Assam, but have often remained overlooked in national narratives.Chief Minister Sarma praised Prime Minister Modi for consistently honouring Barphukan’s legacy on national platforms. He pointed to several key initiatives, including the grand celebration of Lachit’s 400th birth anniversary in 2022, the inclusion of Barphukan’s life story in school textbooks, and the unveiling of a grand statue in his memory. These efforts, Sarma noted, signal a broader cultural awakening and recognition of Assam’s proud historical identity.“From reviving lost histories to integrating Assam’s heroes into India’s collective consciousness, Modiji has become one of the greatest cultural ambassadors of our land,” Sarma added.
Historians and scholars across Assam have also welcomed the Prime Minister’s remarks. Many see it as a long-awaited acknowledgment of the region’s historical contributions to the Indian nation. Cultural activists noted that such recognition is vital not only for preserving regional history but also for inspiring future generations to learn from the courage, patriotism, and leadership of icons like Lachit Barphukan.Political observers see Modi’s reference as more than symbolic—it marks a clear shift toward inclusive national storytelling that embraces regional narratives and local heroes. The move is being interpreted as part of a larger effort to strengthen cultural unity and promote a deeper understanding of India’s diverse past.
