People of Assam will abandon BJP’s flashy deceptive shop and return to Congress’s reliable old shop: Khera

At present, several final examinations including the matriculation exams are being held in Assam. Students who waste their time throughout the year without studying usually begin studying seriously only two or three days before the examinations. The BJP government in Assam led by Himanta Biswa Sarma is now in a similar situation.

With elections approaching, the government has started distributing ₹9,000 among women. Flyovers are being hurriedly constructed and inaugurated. The government has suddenly remembered the issue of proper wages for tea garden workers. For so long, the Chief Minister had ignored these matters and remained busy creating Hindu–Muslim divisions. Just as students who study only at the last moment often fail to pass well, similarly, even if the government distributes money before the elections, the BJP in Assam will not be able to form the government again. Women in the state have already decided that they will no longer tolerate this corrupt and oppressive government.

This was stated by Pawan Khera, Chairman of the Media and Communications Department of the All India Congress Committee, while addressing a press conference held this afternoon at Hotel Lily in Guwahati during his visit to Assam for organisational work. He alleged that the BJP and its government work only for their own interests and that ministers, including the Chief Minister, prioritise the interests of their families above all else.

Khera also strongly criticised the BJP government for circulating AI-generated images of modern roads on social media and claiming them to be roads in Assam. He compared Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to the controversy involving Galgotias University, where claims were made about creating a Chinese robot dog at an AI summit, which embarrassed India globally. “Himanta Biswa Sarma is a ‘Galgotia Chief Minister’. He claims Assam’s roads have improved through AI, yet Assam still ranks third in the country in terms of poor road conditions,” Khera said.

He further remarked that a government that repeatedly resorts to falsehood cannot deliver justice to Assam’s beloved artist Zubeen Garg. According to Khera, despite boasting about preparing a watertight charge sheet, the case was so poorly handled that the court had to order the unfreezing of the accused’s bank account.

Khera asserted that no one can save Himanta Biswa Sarma now—not even those sitting in Delhi, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He expressed confidence that under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and its allies will form the next government in Assam and establish a “new Assam model.”

He contrasted this with the “Gujarat model,” which he said benefited only four Gujaratis—Gautam Adani, Mukesh Ambani, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah—while the Assam model under Gaurav Gogoi would benefit every Assamese citizen.

Khera also questioned why the Chief Minister frequently travels to Odisha at night and alleged that investments linked to him exist not only across Assam but also outside the state and even abroad. These matters, he said, would gradually come to light.

He criticised the government for spending public money on publicity, saying he saw more than a thousand banners featuring Modi and Himanta along the road from the airport. According to him, the BJP government spends nearly ₹500 crore every year on such propaganda using taxpayers’ money.

Khera further alleged that the present Chief Minister has a record of betraying and humiliating senior leaders. He cited examples involving former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and former Congress leader Tarun Gogoi.

He also criticised the government for renaming the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital, saying that even the first Assamese President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, had not been spared from insult.

During the press conference, Khera once again challenged the Chief Minister regarding reports that he had met a Maulana named Dewan Mohammad Saidur Rahman Sisti Saidabadi in Dhaka before joining the BJP. He alleged that Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the BJP on the advice of that cleric during a politically uncertain period.

Responding to questions about alliances, Khera said the Congress organisation in Assam remains strong and confident. However, when fighting a party that has accumulated enormous wealth and control over the administration through irregular means, alliances sometimes become necessary. Decisions regarding alliances, he added, are based on grassroots feedback and various reports.

When asked about Gaurav Gogoi’s social media post regarding Raijor Dal, Khera remarked that the post contained commas, semicolons and question marks—but no full stop yet.

Responding to questions about whether the “Modi magic” would return in upcoming assembly elections in states such as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, Khera said the Modi magic had already ended a decade ago.

Explaining why people should vote for Congress, he used the analogy of a flashy new shop versus an old reliable shop. Customers may initially be attracted to a dazzling new shop, but after being deceived a few times they return to the old shop that offers quality products and honest service. “Congress,” he said, “is that reliable old shop.”

Khera expressed confidence that the people of Assam, having been misled twice by BJP’s propaganda, would once again rally behind the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi to build a new and prosperous Assam.

At today’s press conference, senior Vice-Presidents of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and former MLAs Pranoy Rabha and Naba Talukdar, along with Social Media Department Chairman Rituparna Konwar, were present. The press conference was conducted by Bedabrat Bora, Chairman of the Media and Communications Department of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
