Oxford University Press (OUP) has launched a trilingual Oxford Sanskrit-Hindi-English dictionary in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Sansthanam (UPSS), marking a significant addition to its portfolio of Indian language dictionaries. This initiative aims to preserve and promote the Sanskrit language, which was granted ‘Classical’ status in 2005, and aligns with the Indian government’s recent inclusion of Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali as classical languages.
The new dictionary features over 25,000 carefully selected words, aiming to make Sanskrit accessible to learners worldwide. Mr. Sumanta Datta, Managing Director of OUP India, emphasized the dictionary’s role in fostering linguistic diversity and supporting the New Education Policy 2020’s emphasis on multilingualism.
In Kolkata, the dictionary is expected to enhance language learning and cultural understanding, catering to educational institutions and language enthusiasts alike. With Kolkata’s vibrant academic community and diverse linguistic heritage, OUP’s offering is poised to benefit students and educators who seek to deepen their knowledge of Sanskrit and its historical significance.
