Twelve foreign delegates from Election Management Bodies of several countries, along with three representatives of the Election Commission of India, arrived at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on Wednesday. The delegation has come for a two-day tour under the International Election Visitors Programme (IEVP) for a two-day visit, in connection with the April 9 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, marking a significant step towards global electoral collaboration and observation. “The visiting team comprises representatives from countries including Angola, Bhutan, Egypt, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Benin and Croatia,” a statement issued by the joint chief electoral officer, Assam, said. The initiative aims to provide an opportunity for international observers to witness and understand India’s electoral processes first-hand. On April 8, upon arrival, the delegates will participate in briefings by the chief electoral officer, Assam, including visits to dispatch centers and control rooms to observe election preparedness at the field level. On April 9, the delegates will visit multiple polling stations of a few districts of Assam to observe voting procedures, security arrangements and use of election technologies.
