The Election Commission of India has completed preparations for the Assam Legislative Assembly Elections 2026, which will be held in a single phase on April 9. Officials said all steps have been taken to ensure that polling is conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner across all 126 constituencies.Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel said administrative and logistical arrangements are in place. Central observers have already been deployed to monitor law and order, along with election expenditure during the polling process. A total of 2,50,54,463 voters will cast their votes to decide the fate of 722 candidates. The electorate includes 1,25,31,552 male voters, 1,25,22,593 female voters and 318 voters under the ‘others’ category. In addition, there are 63,423 service voters.
To increase transparency, the Commission has introduced webcasting at all polling stations. The state has 31,490 polling stations, including 31,486 main booths and 4 auxiliary booths. Each station will be monitored live from the offices of District Election Officers, the Chief Electoral Officer and the Commission.Security has been strengthened with the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces to ensure peaceful voting. Authorities have also arranged basic facilities at polling stations, including drinking water, toilets, waiting areas and wheelchair access for persons with disabilities.
For smooth conduct of polling, 1,51,132 personnel have been deployed. The Commission has kept 41,320 ballot units, 43,975 control units and 43,997 VVPAT machines ready, including reserves. The voter list includes 6,42,314 first-time voters aged 18–19, 2,50,006 voters above 80 years and 2,05,085 persons with disabilities. Postal ballot facility has been provided to senior citizens above 85 and eligible persons with disabilities, with thousands already using the option.
