Uncertainty regarding a potential opposition alliance for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections has escalated following a cryptic social media post by Akhil Gogoi, which hinted at failed discussions between his party, Raijor Dal, and the Indian National Congress. The comment coincided with Congress’s announcement of a series of joint campaign meetings with various opposition parties aimed at establishing a united front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Congress is working closely with partners like the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Assam Jatiya Parishad to broaden its coalition, although seat-sharing arrangements remain unsettled. Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, emphasized the urgency of collaborative efforts, particularly as elections are anticipated to occur before Bohag Bihu in mid-April. He mentioned that the party had already designated candidates for 42 constituencies.
The opposition strategy faced further complications as Akhil Gogoi expressed dissatisfaction with the recent exclusion of Raijor Dal from acknowledged alliances during a Facebook live session. Despite the lack of direct discussions, he left the door open for potential collaboration, indicating that the decision now resides with Congress leaders.
The current political landscape in the Assam Assembly reveals the BJP holds a dominant position with 64 seats, while Congress has 26, pressing the need for a cohesive opposition to effectively challenge the ruling party. The recent developments within the opposition coalition highlight ongoing challenges in achieving unity ahead of the election.
