Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Silchar, seized a large consignment of Yaba tablets worth an estimated Rs 168 crore in Assam’s Cachar district and arrested one alleged drug peddler, officials said.
The operation was carried out during the night of August 25 and 26 at Jujhang Pahar in the Lakhipur area of Cachar district.
During the operation, security personnel recovered around 5.6 lakh Yaba tablets weighing approximately 60 kg. A Tata truck allegedly used for transporting the narcotics was also seized.
According to officials, the seized consignment is suspected to have originated in Manipur and was being transported towards Assam through National Highway 37. The authorities are investigating the suspected route and the people involved in the movement of the narcotics.
One person, alleged to be involved in drug trafficking, was arrested during the operation. Further investigation is expected to determine the source of the consignment, its intended destination and whether more people were involved in the alleged trafficking network.
The seizure is being considered a significant action against the suspected inter-state narcotics trafficking network operating along the Manipur-Assam route.
Assam Rifles said the joint operation was part of its continued efforts to identify and disrupt drug-trafficking routes in the Northeast. The force has been working with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies to target the movement of narcotics through the region.
The Northeast has remained an important area of concern for security agencies because of its geographical location and the use of different routes by drug trafficking networks. Authorities have been conducting regular operations to intercept narcotics consignments and identify those involved in their transportation and distribution.
