On Swahid Diwas, PM Modi honors the sacrifices of the Assam agitation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement on the occasion of Swahid Diwas, recalling their sacrifice and reaffirming the Union Government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests and aspirations that shaped the movement.

In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said the Assam Movement holds an important place in India’s history and continues to shape the identity of the State. “Today, on Swahid Diwas, we recall the valour of all those who were a part of the Assam Movement. The movement will always have a prime place in our history. We reiterate our commitment to fulfilling the dreams of those who participated in the Assam Movement, notably the strengthening of Assam’s culture and the all-round progress of the state,” he wrote.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s tribute, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the sacrifices of the martyrs remain a guiding force for the State’s development journey. “Rightly said, Adarniya Shri Narendra Modi Ji! The legacy of the Bir Swahids of the Assam Movement continues to be our guiding beacon. With your guidance, we remain committed to ensuring the holistic development of Assam, just as they had envisioned,” the Chief Minister said.

Highlighting the painful chapter of Assam’s political history, Sarma alleged that over 860 young people lost their lives during the movement while protesting against illegal infiltration and demanding protection for Assamese identity. “At that time Congress ruled, and during that period 860 youngsters were killed merely for demanding a safe Assam,” he stated.
