Under the auspices of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the Assam Royal Global University (RGU) is set to host the Northeast Zone Inter University Football (Men) Tournament for the 2025-2026 season. Scheduled to occur at the RGU campus in Guwahati from January 5 to January 11, 2026, the tournament serves as a key initiative for RGU to promote values such as discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship while also strengthening inter-university unity across the region.
The opening ceremony on January 5 will feature Kento Jini, the Minister of Law, Legislative and Justice, as well as Sports & Youth Affairs from the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, who will act as the chief guest. According to Prof. Amlandeep Das, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the tournament is anticipated to showcase a high level of football talent emanating from the Northeast, providing a crucial platform for young athletes to advance in competitive sports. A total of 31 universities from the Northeast will participate, with RGU hosting 24 of these universities on its campus, facilitating the accommodation of approximately 481 players and 49 coaches and managers. This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to fostering sports at the national level through its substantial infrastructure and resources.
