Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore a business integration through a joint holding company. The partnership aims to leverage synergies for achieving carbon neutrality, enhancing vehicle intelligence, and addressing rapid technological advancements in the automotive industry.
The MOU, signed on August 1, builds on an earlier strategic agreement in March to collaborate on next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and fundamental technologies. If realized, the integration is expected to consolidate management resources, streamline operations, and improve long-term corporate value.
“This potential integration represents a pivotal moment for both companies,” said Makoto Uchida, Nissan’s CEO. “By uniting our strengths, we can deliver unparalleled value to customers.” Honda’s CEO Toshihiro Mibe emphasized the importance of merging resources to navigate environmental and industrial challenges, adding that a decision on integration is expected by January 2025. Projected synergies include standardizing vehicle platforms, optimizing manufacturing, integrating R&D functions, and streamlining supply chains. The joint holding company, set to be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by August 2026, will make Nissan and Honda its wholly-owned subsidiaries.
