Unidentified miscreants used an excavator to uproot and remove a statue of Jawaharlal Nehru in Poilapool, Assam, late Monday night. The incident, occurring at a busy market junction, has caused significant outrage among local residents and political groups, especially the Indian National Congress. CCTV footage captured the miscreants dislodging the statue with heavy machinery and loading it onto a vehicle, though their identities remain unknown. Following the incident, police initiated an investigation, reviewing footage and collecting evidence to locate those responsible. Former Silchar district Congress president Pradip Kumar Dey, alongside party workers, filed an FIR demanding immediate arrests. He noted that the statue had been installed in the 1990s by local MLA Dinesh Prasad Goala. Congress leaders condemned the act, questioning how such equipment could be used without notice, implying the act was premeditated. Several local organizations expressed their condemnation of the vandalism, urging for swift justice. Although tensions rose, no further incidents were reported, and police increased security to maintain order during the ongoing investigation.
