Indra Hang Subba, Member of Parliament from Sikkim, has welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval of a draft amendment Bill aimed at implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies from 2029.According to reports, the Centre is preparing changes to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam to make the long-awaited provision operational. The move is expected to ensure that one-third of seats are reserved for women starting from the 2029 general elections.
To enable discussion and passage of the proposed amendments, the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament has been extended by three days, from April 16 to April 18.Describing the decision as a “landmark and progressive step,” Subba said it reflects a strong commitment to improving women’s representation in the country’s democratic system. He said greater participation of women in legislative bodies will strengthen governance and make policymaking more inclusive.
Subba also recalled his support for the Women’s Reservation Bill when it was passed in 2023. He said it is encouraging to see the proposal moving closer to actual implementation after years of discussion.The Sikkim MP further stated that the decision highlights the NDA government’s focus on inclusive governance. He added that the step would play an important role in increasing women’s participation in public life and nation-building.
