Nagaon lok sabha bypoll conducted peacefully; over 70 percent voter turnout recorded

A voter turnout of over 70 percent was recorded in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election by Tuesday evening with polling remaining by and large peaceful throughout the day.
Voting began at 7 am and concluded at 5 pm across the eight Assembly segments under the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency.
Polling was held across 2112 polling stations including five auxiliary polling stations in the constituency. Of these, five are model polling stations and 335 are polling stations managed by women.
According to official sources, no untoward incident has been reported from any polling station in the eight Assembly segments under the Lok Sabha constituency till the end of voting.
Till 3pm, the Laharighat Assembly segment recorded the highest turnout at 74.74 per cent, while Nagaon-Batadraba registered the lowest at 61.92 per cent.
The turnout in the other six Assembly segments at 3pm was 67.82 per cent in Morigaon, 65 per cent in Raha, 72.04 per cent in Rupahihat, 71.79 per cent in Dhing, 72.38 per cent in Jagiroad and 73.46 per cent in Samaguri.
Speaking to the media, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma, who cast his vote at Mayong Higher Secondary School under the Jagiroad Assembly constituency, said he was confident of winning the bypoll as people have voted for development.
On the other hand, Congress candidate and former MLA Sibamoni Bora, expressed optimism that her party would retain the seat. “The contest will be mainly with BJP,” she said after casting her vote at Majgaon Primary School in the Nagaon-Batadraba segment.
Fifteen candidates are contesting the high-stakes bypoll even as primary contest will be between the ruling NDA candidate, Sharma, Opposition Congress’ Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
Altogether, 1902009 voters were eligible to vote in the bypoll. Of them, 9,58,595 are male, 943364 female, while 50 are third gender voters.
Altogether, 9664 polling personnel have been detailed to ensure the smooth functioning of all the polling stations.
