Music Icon Alisha Chinai Slams Unethical Contracts, Calls Them Reason for Her Bollywood Departure

Singer Alisha Chinai, known for her major hits such as “Made in India” and “Kajra Re,” has maintained selectivity in her Hindi film music choices. In a recent interview, she described this decision as a deliberate protest against what she considers ‘illegal’ contracts imposed on singers within the industry.

In an interview with Free Press Journal, Alisha explained her absence from Bollywood, stating that she found the music scene boring and felt burnt out as an artist. She expressed a desire to pursue different endeavors and mentioned that political issues within the industry were also contributing factors to her decision to stay away.

Elaborating on her choices, the 60-year-old singer expressed her concerns regarding copyright issues impacting artists, emphasizing a lack of fair play and the legality of contracts presented to them. She refused to sign what she considered illegal contracts, which contributed to her being overlooked by others. Additionally, she mentioned personal issues that required her to stay away for an extended period, illustrating that multiple factors influenced her decisions.

Alisha, a prolific singer in the Hindi film industry during the 90s and 2000s, has recorded only one song for a Hindi film since 2013: “Zinadgi Meri Dance Dance” for the 2017 film “Daddy.” Her last hit prior to this was “Dil Tu Hi Bata,” from the film “Krrish 3” released in 2013.

Alisha has achieved notable success in the indipop genre, particularly with her albums Babydoll and Bombay Girl, which established her unique presence in Indian pop music during the 1980s. However, it was her 1997 hit, Made in India, that propelled her to widespread fame across the country. This album has become one of the highest-selling non-film soundtracks in the history of Indian music.
