Member of Parliament from Darjeeling and BJP National Spokesperson Raju Bista inaugurated the newly constructed “Bir Chilarai Bhawan” at Kawakhari, Medical More in Siliguri on Sunday. The building, named after the legendary warrior Bir Chilarai, has been partially built with funds from the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme. The event was organised by the Siliguri Kamata Cultural Society and saw large participation from members of the Rajbanshi-Kamatapuri community. People from different parts of Siliguri, the Terai, Dooars and Darjeeling Hills gathered to witness the historic moment and celebrate their cultural unity. Bista praised the Koch-Rajbanshi community for their strong cultural roots, traditional values, and continued efforts in preserving their heritage. He said the community has always played an important role in the region’s identity and development. “The Koch-Rajbanshi people have a rich history and deep cultural traditions. Through music, dance, art, language, and lifestyle, they have kept their heritage alive for generations,” Bista said. “It is a matter of great pride to represent such a diverse and culturally vibrant region.”
He highlighted the importance of the Koch-Rajbanshi language, describing it as not just a tool for communication, but a reflection of the community’s long history and shared memories. He also spoke about the unique folk art, music and handicrafts that have made the community’s culture known far beyond the region.“The language of the Koch-Rajbanshi people carries within it their stories, songs, and spirit. It is our responsibility to keep it alive,” he added. The MP further said that the Koch-Rajbanshi people are known for their hardworking nature, honesty, and agricultural knowledge. He said that these qualities have made them a respected and important part of the social fabric in North Bengal. Speaking about development, Bista said the construction of “Bir Chilarai Bhawan” is a step forward in recognising the contributions of the community and providing a space for cultural gatherings, education, and heritage promotion.
“I feel honoured to have helped with this project through MPLAD funds. This Bhawan will serve as a cultural hub and a place for learning, dialogue, and celebration of our shared heritage,” he said. Bista also assured the gathering that he would continue to support the community at every level. He reminded the people that he has already raised the demand in Parliament for the inclusion of the Rajbanshi-Kamatapuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. “This is not just about language recognition. It is about giving due respect to a community that has shaped the cultural landscape of our region for centuries. I will keep working to ensure that the voice of the Rajbanshi-Kamatapuri community is heard loud and clear,” he said.
