Medanta has formally commenced construction of its 400+ bed super-speciality hospital in Guwahati, signalling a major private healthcare investment push in the Northeast. The Bhoomi Poojan ceremony, held on October 31, was attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Medanta Chairman & MD Dr. Naresh Trehan, Group CEO Pankaj Sahni, and senior government and community leaders, marking the beginning of what analysts see as a significant milestone in strengthening the region’s healthcare ecosystem.
With an investment outlay of approximately ₹500 crore, the upcoming hospital at Sarusajai Industrial Estate along NH-27 will feature advanced tertiary and quaternary care, including transplant programmes, robotic surgeries, cardiac and neuro sciences, oncology, trauma care, diagnostics, and preventive health services. The project is expected to create 5,000–7,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing a substantial boost to skilled and semi-skilled employment. Dr. Trehan said the Northeast has historically lacked access to advanced medical infrastructure, while Sahni emphasised Guwahati’s role as a strategic gateway serving over 50 million people across the region.
Healthcare observers note steady patient outflow to Guwahati and metropolitan centres for high-end treatment. The Medanta Guwahati facility is expected to reduce medical travel costs and waiting periods for Meghalaya residents while stimulating healthcare-linked industries such as diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and medical transport services. Analysts also expect increased competitive investment from private hospitals, accelerating modernisation and specialist recruitment in the region.
