Medanta strengthens neurological care with advanced ‘Brain Pacemaker’ surgery

As neurological disorders continue to rank among the leading causes of disability worldwide, contributing nearly 10% to India’s overall disease burden, Gurugram-based Medanta – The Medicity has enhanced its advanced neurological care services through its specialised Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) programme, popularly known as ‘Brain Pacemaker’ surgery. Recognised as an international destination for DBS, Medanta has been named Best Private Hospital in India by Newsweek for six consecutive years. The therapy is known to provide meaningful relief to patients suffering from advanced-stage Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, refractory epilepsy (adult onset), essential tremor, and advanced obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

The procedure is led by Dr. Anirban Deep Banerjee, Director, Neurosurgery, Institute of Neurosciences at Medanta Gurugram. He said DBS involves implanting electrodes in specific brain areas to regulate abnormal signals, restore motor function and significantly improve quality of life, particularly when medicines fail to control symptoms.

Dr. Banerjee has performed over 300 DBS procedures in the past 15 years with consistently high success rates. The programme combines advanced imaging for precise brain targeting with innovations such as directional leads, real-time brain-sensing biomarker feedback, AI-guided precision targeting and remote programming, enabling personalised and symptom-responsive treatment for patients.
