A major fire broke out in Assam’s Jorhat district on Sunday night, destroying four houses in a densely populated locality and causing panic among residents. The incident took place at Raja Maidam in the Gojpuria area, where a series of LPG cylinder explosions is believed to have triggered the blaze. According to initial information, the fire started suddenly and spread quickly after at least three cooking gas cylinders exploded one after another. The blasts intensified the flames, which soon engulfed nearby houses, most of them rented accommodations. Within a short time, four houses were reduced to ashes, leaving the affected families in distress.
Local residents said the situation turned chaotic as people rushed out of their homes to save themselves. Many feared more explosions as the fire continued to spread. Thick smoke and high flames could be seen from a distance, creating panic in the entire neighbourhood. Despite the scale of the fire and the damage caused, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far. Residents managed to escape in time, which helped avoid any loss of life.
Fire and emergency services were informed immediately by locals. Several fire tenders reached the spot and carried out a rescue and firefighting operation. After continuous efforts, the fire was brought under control, preventing it from spreading further to nearby houses. However, the fire caused heavy property damage, with household belongings, furniture, and other valuables completely destroyed. The affected families have suffered significant losses and are now in need of support.
