In a remarkable medical intervention, Manipal Hospital EM Bypass and Mukundapur Cluster successfully treated a 7-year-old child from Kolaghat, Purba Medinipur, who suffered a rare and life-threatening pancreatic injury. The child, Deep Adhikary (name changed), was critically injured when a metallic bookshelf collapsed on him at home. Initial diagnosis at a local hospital suggested liver trauma, but advanced evaluation at Manipal revealed a complete disruption of the pancreatic duct, a condition notoriously difficult to manage in children.
Under the leadership of Dr. Pradeepta Kumar Sethy, Director of Gastroenterology, the hospital team performed a complex ERCP with ductal stenting, enabling pancreatic juices to flow into the intestine safely. The child’s recovery involved coordinated care from multiple specialties, including pediatric ICU management, interventional radiology, and nutritional support. After more than a month of intensive care, Deep was discharged in stable condition, with the stent later successfully removed.
In Purba Medinipur, this case has drawn attention to the need for timely access to advanced medical facilities. Local residents emphasized that while initial care is available at regional hospitals, complex pediatric emergencies often require transfer to specialized centers like Kolkata, underlining the critical role of urban medical hubs for surrounding rural areas.
