A recent study in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology reveals a concerning rise in pre-diabetes across India, affecting 15.3% of the population, up from the 6–15% range in 2017. As pre-diabetic cases soar, Dr. Rohini Patil, MBBS and nutritionist, stresses the critical role of nutrition and lifestyle in reversing this condition.
Dr. Patil advocates for a diet rich in almonds, green leafy vegetables, Greek yogurt, lean proteins, and whole grains. Almonds, in particular, have been shown to significantly reduce pre-diabetes risk, with recent studies indicating their potential to normalize blood sugar levels comparably to medication. Leafy greens like spinach and fenugreek, low in carbs and high in fiber, support blood sugar control. Greek yogurt and lean proteins aid in slowing carbohydrate digestion and improving insulin sensitivity, while whole grains offer sustained energy and better blood sugar management.
In Kolkata, the emphasis on clean eating and physical activity is resonating with residents. Many in the city are adopting these dietary recommendations, reflecting a growing awareness of pre-diabetes management. As more individuals integrate these practices, there’s optimism for improved community health outcomes. Dr. Patil highlights the importance of a holistic approach: “Alongside dietary adjustments, regular physical activity—at least 30 minutes a day—is crucial in managing pre-diabetes and preventing its progression to type 2 diabetes.” By adopting these changes, individuals can effectively manage their blood sugar levels and enhance overall well-being.
