Man found d*ad by hanging self in Assam, investigation underway

The body of a 49-year-old man from Assam was recovered from a forested area in Nohwet village under Pynursla Police Station on Wednesday, prompting police to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The deceased, identified as Tapan Dey, a resident of Bishnupath, Pani Tanky, Ganeshnagar, Basistha in Kamrup Metro district, was found by a group of local women who had gone to collect firewood.

According to police, the body was discovered hanging from a tree on a sloped patch of jungle, approximately 100 metres from the metal road. A Tata Intra pickup truck, driven by Dey, was found parked nearby with all his personal belongings still inside. Upon receiving the information, police reached the spot along with a mobile forensic team, which conducted an on-site examination. The body was subsequently shifted to Civil Hospital, Shillong, for post-mortem.

Preliminary examination revealed no external injuries on the body. Investigations so far indicate that Dey had travelled to Nohwet on November 8 to deliver a generator to a company involved in the construction of a mobile tower. He was last seen on November 9 at around 10 am. While the inquest suggests a possible case of suicide, police have clarified that the exact cause of death—whether suicide or homicide—will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is received. Further investigation is underway.
