A young man transporting meat in his vehicle was chased by a gang of motorcyclist for around half-an-hour before being waylaid and beaten up in full public view near Jama Masjid main market off Jail Road here on Friday. The police suspect the man, a Muslim, was beaten up on suspicion of transporting beef.
Gurugram Police Spokesperson Subhash Boken said one of the accused, Pradeep, 26, was arrested. “The motive behind the attack is not clear, but it could be prompted by suspicion over transportation of beef. The samples of the meat are taken.” The assailants are booked under charges of rioting, unlawful assembly, causing grievous hurt and wrongful confinement, among others.
In videos of the incident, which have gone viral on social media, the assailants can also be seen beating Lukman with a hammer.
Later, they pushed him back into the pickup truck and drove it to Badshahpur village in Sohna. A police team, which had given the assailants a chase, finally managed to rescue the youth but not before he was thrashed one more time.
Not content with beating up Lukman, the ‘cow vigilantes’ attacked the police as well, damaging their vehicle and finally fleeing.
Lukman was finally taken to a hospital where his condition is reported to be ‘stable’. A police case has been registered against ‘unidentified individuals’, even though their faces are clearly visible in the videos.
