Mamoni Raisom Goswami, a literary hero, is honored in Assam on her 83rd birthday

The 83rd birth anniversary of celebrated Ramayani scholar, acclaimed writer, and Jnanpith awardee Dr. Indira Goswami, popularly known as Mamoni Raisom Goswami, was observed on Friday at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir in Uzan Bazar. The event, organized by the South East Asia Ramayan Research Centre—founded by Dr. Goswami herself—brought together literary enthusiasts, scholars, and cultural icons to honor her remarkable legacy. Retired Lieutenant General Rana Pratap Kalita attended as the chief guest, while former Tezpur University professor Dr. Pradip Jyoti Mahanta was the guest of honour. Several distinguished personalities from Assam’s literary and cultural circles were also present. Addressing the gathering, Lt Gen Kalita highlighted the timeless relevance of Dr. Goswami’s works.

“Whenever inequality emerges, whenever women struggle for their rights, and whenever freedom of expression is threatened, Mamoni Raisom Goswami’s writings remind us of empathy,” he said. He added, “Her literature not only celebrates the beauty of language but also the beauty of truth. Had she been alive today, she would have raised her voice against social injustices and reminded us to uphold empathy and equality as the foundations of civilization.” Dr. Mahanta reflected on her literary journey, observing that Dr. Goswami’s creations were a form of devotion. “Her novels, inspired by Ramayani literature, celebrated life, humanity, and the dream of freedom, while portraying social realities,” he said. “Themes of women’s liberation appear throughout her works, even though she never identified as a feminist writer. The Centre should organize multi-day discussions to explore her life and contributions more deeply.”

The programme commenced with a mangalcharan by artiste Barnali Das, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp before Dr. Goswami’s portrait. A minute of silence was observed in memory of singer Zubeen Garg. Centre director Sabita Sharma welcomed the audience and recalled key moments from the writer’s life. Family members of Dr. Goswami presented a group song, while artiste Namrata Goswami performed a dance recital. Actor Zerifa Wahid recited two of her poems, bringing her words vividly to life. The event was anchored by Sukanaya Kashyap Mahanta, with the vote of thanks delivered by Centre president Jyotirmoy Goswami.
