Makar Sankranti 2026: California Almonds add a healthy touch to harvest festivities

Makar Sankranti, which marks the arrival of longer days and the harvest season, is being celebrated across India with traditional fervour. Known by different names such as Pongal, Lohri, Uttarayan and Magh Bihu, the festival symbolises abundance, gratitude and new beginnings. As families prepare festive dishes and sweets, experts are highlighting the importance of mindful nutrition during celebrations. Nutritionists and health experts have pointed to the role of California Almonds in adding balance to festive meals. Rich in protein, healthy fats and antioxidants, almonds are known to support immunity, provide sustained energy and help manage blood sugar levels when consumed with carbohydrate-rich foods.

Ritika Samaddar, Regional Head – Dietetics, Max Healthcare, New Delhi, said that small ingredient choices during festivals can make a big difference to health. She noted that almonds are naturally satiating and can be easily added to laddoos, savoury dishes or eaten whole.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, Dr. Madhumitha Krishnan said almonds are considered strength-enhancing and beneficial during winter as they help balance Vata and support digestion. Nutrition consultant Sheela Krishnaswamy added that almonds enhance both nutrition and texture in traditional dishes without excess sugar or refined fats. Bollywood actress Soha Ali Khan also shared that almonds have long been part of her family’s festive cooking, helping strike a balance between indulgence and well-being. Promoted by the Almond Board of California, California Almonds continue to be positioned as a wholesome addition to traditional celebrations, blending modern nutrition with age-old festive customs.
